A Tribute to his Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

Maharishi took Maha Samadhi on the 5th of February 2008 (reported as 7:08 pm in Vlodrop, Holland). He was one of the great sages of our time. Without his work, Vedic Astrology, Ayurveda, Vedic Architecture, Ghandharva Veda music and much else would be far less popular and widely studied. He trained a whole new generation of Vedic Pandits to maintain the traditional Vedic performances that are said to sustain life on this planet. Besides, he brought a simple and effective form of meditation to millions and those he trained are now leaders in all kinds of important public arenas.

While the press are still trying to downplay his assertion that large groups of meditators can reduce crime and violence, I can testify to the scientific evidence that this is true. I reviewed some 40 studies of situations where a group was formed and then stood down and the statistics of crime, etc. were collected. I reviewed the original data, checked the scientists' calculations in detail and found that the effect was very consistent and statistically significant. With this scientific evidence, why are some media trying to suggest that this effect does not exist? Obviously they are afraid of the consequence of accepting that it is real. Instead of spending more and more billions on fighting, a relatively small amount could be spent supporting such a group. This is an ancient idea. Almost every civilisation has supported communities of religous to meditate on their behalf as well as encouraging the populace to come together to pray and meditate. Our greatest buildings are the temples, churches, etc. built for this purpose.

My experience of him was of the extreme infinity of his consciousness. His natal chart shows his nature and greatness and his moment of passing indicates his complete surrender to the natural law. All the maraka (death causing) factors were in play in the Dashas (planetary cycles) with Saturn and Ketu rising. The Ascendant was exactly on his natal Moon surrounded by Saturn, his ruling planet, and Ketu, the significator of liberation. Saturn and Ketu in Leo associated with the Moon represent the Great Lord, Shiva and His Shakti.

Here is the chart of the Samadhi with his natal chart in the centre. This is a North Indian style chart with the circle of the Zodiac imposed so the exact positions of the planets are obvious. The cardinal points are also clearer than in any other type of chart including those used by Western Astrologers as these four cardinal points are on the 3, 6, 9 and 12 o'clock positions (e.g. the mid heaven is at the 3 o'clock position) and to accomplish this the sizes of the signs have been adjusted. (Those who learn this chart style can make much more accurate predictions). The position of the mid-heaven indicates complete perfection of the mind in Samadhi and lasting fame.

Here are the two charts reversed so we can see the moment from the point of view of the natal chart. The two great benefics, Jupiter and Venus are exactly surrounding his 12th house cusp. In Vedic Astrology, the 12th house shows the destiny after death. Great benefics in the 12th indicate going to heaven. It is noteworthy that after his moment of passing his successor announced that 'Maharishi ji has gone to the heavens'. He could have said many other things. Even though personality cults often surround siants, there is no person. As one great saint put it, "there is no person there, an ego has to be constructed in order to answer the question of the student".
